Fierce competition of 35 tenants competing for one rented property in Central London on average, despite rents soared by 20% in the first quarter

According to British property website Zoopla, rents in central London rose by nearly 20% in the first quarter of this year and 10% in outer London. Some British resident groups have reported that the shortage of housing supply in London has led to fierce competition for rental housing. Some tenants experienced rents being increased by 40% when they renewed their leases, and some were even asked to pay one year's rent in one go.

In May 2020, an average of about 5 tenants competed for one rented property. But in May this year, it became 35 people competing for one. The reasons include - the government introduced additional stamp duty in 2016, coupled with the sharp rise in property prices during the pandemic, making many landlords who originally lend their properties turned out selling their properties. Besides, there has always been a lack of new housing supply. Therefore, the supply of rental properties in London fell to the lowest in five years, and the demand far exceeds the supply.
